Project Definition


RFID library systems consist of an integrated circuit and an antenna, which enables it to function as a transponder. It can be attached to any item with the information about the item stored in it. Details such as name, origin, price, ownership of an item etc. can be a part of the information stored in a RFID tag's microchip. When a RFID reader tries to read data from a tag, its antenna emits electromagnetic energy which is received by RFID tag's antenna. The tag's microchip uses this energy to emit a radio signal using the tag's antenna. The RFID reader receives and interprets this signal and passes interpreted information to a computer network. This computer network can provide information about the items carrying the RFID tag and their present status to a computer user.

RFID library management, using RFID tags library, is easy and convenient. A RFID library management system consists of books, each attached with an RFID tag, RFID reader, computer network and software. Library staff handle lending, returning, sorting, tagging etc. of books, using RFID tags in this library system. A person can locate RFID library books marked with a RFID tags, using the RFID reader which identifies and locates the book. When the book is carried to the counter, the library staff can either activate or deactivate the electronic article surveillance bit in the book's tag. If a book is borrowed, then the surveillance bit is deactivated.

The main entrance of the library is equipped with a RFID antenna which receives radio signals from every book's tag being carried out of the library. It signals a warning, in case a book that is carried outside, with surveillance bit in its RFID tag active. In this way a RFID equipped library system controls the inflow or outflow of tagged library books and prevents the theft of books. When a book is returned, the surveillance bit in its tag is activated, and the book cannot be taken past the entrance of the library, without an alarm being sounded as well as we are providing automation for user’s entry and exit at the gate level. Every user will be having rfid tag for identifying each person and maintaining their information in the system.

Borrowing and returning of books can be fully automatized with the help of self check-in/out systems. Using low-priced RFID tags in libraries will reduce the cost of modernization. RFID library management system makes the library users as well as the library staff's task easy.

The Purpose (Mission)

  • To provide an automated system to monitor and manage the Libraries using the technology of Radio Frequency Identification.

These are the targets we want to meet

  • To provide the students with the chance to self-issue their books and manage their profiles.
  • To reduce the burden of the library staff by giving them ample time to help the students with their research on various books.
  • To provide an online database helping the students to improve on their grades and focus on their career paths.
  • To help the parents check the day to day attendance of the students.

This is how our organization will gain.

  • The Radio Frequency Identification Technology will prove to be a great asset for the organization in maintaining discipline among the students.  
  • By providing an online database, the students can be mentored on a regular basis thereby defining their career paths and helping them in achieving their goals.


The central idea behind this project is to design a kit the provides a virtual interaction with the user. Providing them multiple options like Issuing a Book, Renewal of Books, Checking the Availability of a particular book (or) List the Various books that are available in the library on a particular topic etc.. Also to provide the students and Library staff with an online database to  connected wit the college server where every student can access the list of books they have issued so far. It also provides the students with online mentors to guide them with their studies. This helps the students to improve on their technical and communication skills. A website is provided for the students to access their profiles and update them. This website contains the details regarding their day to day attendance, Semester-Wise internal and external marks, A graph representing the Overall Aggregate of B.Tech and tips to improve their performance etc.. This helps the students to analyze their skills and focus better on their career goals.

Measurable Objectives:

  1. Designing the Kit.
  2. Testing the Code provided.
  3. Providing an Online Database for the Students and Library Staff.
  4. Setting up a Discussion Forum for the Mentors.


This project provides the users an experience to virtually interact with an automated RFID based system. Allowing them to instantly surf the database to check the availability of a particular article or book. If it is not available then they could put their names in the waiting list. The users can also register themselves for an online mentor-ship.  

Project Constraints

Some of the constraints of this project are as follows,
  1. It is not possible to keep track of the article's location, once the RFID tag is removed or deactivated.
  2. The cost of the kit for the project is high.
  3. The distance covered by the RFID Module for wireless data transmission is less.
